Skiing Christmas (cont.)

I believe I can ski!
Originally uploaded by nuance1979.
In the spirit of holiday, we held a cozy Christmas Eve party in our hotel rooms with wine, chips, poker and TV. Next morning everybody was experiencing sore muscle (not from the party) even with Advil, a leading pain reliever. (By the way, in Killington, Advil was sold in vending machines in restrooms along with condoms.) More and more people were coming to ski for Christmas. Based on my physical condition, I decided to ski leisurely for the last day.

It was lucky for us to finally have some sunshine: it had been cloudy ever since we came and it was always foggy on the Peak. So we seized the precious opportunity to take some memorable pictures. My favorite was the one when Sika, one of the best skiers in our group, was captured fallen down on the snow with others nearby laughing hilariously at him. I skied mostly on green/easy trails except one run of blue/intermediate trails - Skyeburst and Bear Claw. My skills were noticably improving. While resting at the Bear Moutain, we saw some half-tubing trails with freestyle skiers doing unbelievable aerial stunts.

Our vacation was gone in the blink of an eye. We left exhausted physically but (still) excited psychologically. During the three days of skiing, we also checked out some good restaurants in Killington thanks to Sika: Wobbly Barn Steakhouse for good steaks, Baja Burrito for great Mexican food and Yoshi Sushi for so-so Chinese. (By the way, Killington's "nightlife" starts at 4pm, when the ski trails close.) We also enjoyed RSN TV channel.

P.S., I bought a set of Oneida flatware in Michelangelo pattern, which I've been wanting for a long time, on our way driving back with a very nice deal. Yeah!

天国之秋

Book review: “Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom: China, the West, and the Epic Story of the Taiping Civil War" by Stephen R. Platt 秋天有两种:一种是丰收喜悦之秋,一种是伤感可悲之秋。太平天国之秋,毫无疑问是第二种。 《天国之秋》改变了很多我对于太平天国的认识和评价。作者一上来就对太平天国运动的性质作了一个中肯的评价,认为西方史学界长期以来称之为“太平叛乱”,以及中国史学界以太平天国为原始共产主义而称之为“太平革命”或“太平起义”,都失之偏颇。唯一恰当的称谓,当为“太平内战”。 ("The Taiping were indeed rebels, but to call the entire war the Taiping Rebellion is to cast the rebels forever in the wrong, and to blame on them for defying their legitimate rulers and destroying what one might surmise was otherwise a peaceful and stable empire." "...just as it is unfair to suggest that the Taiping were solely responsible for the devastation of the war, it is likewise an exaggeration to claim they were building some kind of peasant utopia.")

Jacky Cheung Rocked Atlantic City, Again: Photos

As promised, I gave you some photos from my concert-going Atlantic City trip. Jacky Cheung Concert Poster Originally uploaded by yisu1979 This was the official poster for this encore show. I got it from the organizer's website . In case you don't speak Chinese, the words above read, "By popular demand, the King of Cantonpop returns with honor." Sounds a little cheesy in English, huh? Well, there's always something lost in translation. Trump Taj Mahal Originally uploaded by yisu1979 The concert was held in the Arena in the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort , a decent place for this kind of concerts. Taj Mahal Casino Originally uploaded by yisu1979 If you haven't seen a casino before, here it is. (And you've seen all of them.) Chandelier Originally uploaded by yisu1979 Taj Mahal is richly decorated. It tries to pitch itself as a better or higher-end casino than others. (So they can charge you more.) T-shirts Orig...

"How Google Works" by Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg

[I wrote this book review long time ago but just realized that I never published it. So it has sat in my draft box for more than 7 years!] This is an interesting book on how to manage a modern technology company in "Internet Century", drawing insights and lessons learned from Google. Their recipe for an innovative company starts with extremely selective and efficient hiring. In fact, many of their advice wouldn't work at all if you don't follow their first advice: Only hire "smart creatives", which is their speak for self-motivated, high-calibre employees. Once you have a team of A-players, the best way to manage them is to create a stimulating work environment and get out of their (creative) way. The work environment, including org chart, is designed to foster interaction and collaboration. Decisions are relied on either technical insights (elitism) or data (pragmatism). Get rid of HiPPO (Highest Paid Person's Opinion), i.e., promote meritocracy. Bi...
